INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY OFFICE "LOGO COMPETITION"

The Intellectual Property Office of St. Kitts and Nevis Logo Competition is inviting entries for a logo competition in celebration of World Intellectual Property Day. (April 26, 2012)

It will be used as the logo of the Intellectual Property Office (IPO) and will appear on all letter heads and documents.

The design must-

·         Must embody or symbolize what the Intellectual Property Office is about

·         Must be the author’s/designer’s original creation

·         Must be unique to St. Kitts and Nevis, attractive, recognizable , memorable, uncomplicated and straight to the point

·         Convey the message or meaning of the symbol

Entries must be computer generated or drawn. However, drawn logos should be able to be digitalized, that is, it should look computer generated.

Entries must be submitted to the IP Office electronically and should include a description or explanation of the design.

There is no entry fee. However, all prospective participants must fill out an entry form at the IPO. 

The deadline for submission is Monday, April 30, 2012.

Prizes include $500 and a World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) Certificate.

The winning design will become the property of the Intellectual Property Office.

WHAT DOES REPARATIONS MEAN FOR ST. KITTS AND NEVIS?

UNESCO St. Kitts and Nevis Scientific Slave Route Project Committee" is holding the fifth of its riveting "Lecture Series" on Tuesday February 28th 2012 at the Sir Cecil Jacobs Auditorium, located at the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank in Bird Rock St. Kitts at 7:00pm.  The public is invited, at No Cost, to learn about "Reparations" and explore what it could mean for St. Kitts and Nevis under the topic "Demystifying the Reparations Debate".

Join Lawyer, Public Speaker and Humanitarian Activist Michael Lorne from Jamaica as we discuss What Reparations are, Who should receive Reparations, What form should Reparations take, and Who should make Reparations.  Michael Lorne studied Law at Cave Hill Campus, Barbados between 1973-1979, attended Norman Manley Law School in Jamaica 1977-1979, was called to the Bar in Jamaica 1979, St. Lucia 1979, Trinidad 1980, St. Vincent 1980, Tortola 1980 and is presently practicing Law in Jamaica.  The Law Office of Michael A. Lorne located in the Monica Bernard Building 75 East Street Kingston Jamaica presently has "...more than thirty (30) Law Suites against the Attorney Genera, the legal arm of the Government for False Imprisonment, Malicious Prosecution, Assault etc, committed upon poor citizens by the police and other servants or agent of the state.  Our Chambers have more cases against the state, than any other Law Firm."  In 1983, Mr. Lorne brought the first case to court, "The Kirk Johnson Case", which was successful in allowing Rastafarian children to attend school with their hair dread-locked.  In 2005, he brought a claim for Reparations against the Queen of England and the British Government.  

He has been President of the "Marcus Garvey Peoples Political Party 2002-2011 and was their General Secretary in 2011.  He is a Radio Broadcaster on "BESS FM" and hosts a program named "Bitter Sugar" every Wednesday 6:00-10:00pm and from 1995 to 1998 he did a program named "Africa the Motherland" on "Irie FM.  Mr. Lorne is owner of "Headstart Book Store" founded in 1990, "Presently the only Black Book Store in Jamaica".  And his is also the owner of "Headstart Printing and Publishing Company" and "Miguel Lorne Printing and Publishing Company founded in 1991. Mr. Lorne has been invited to speaker on topics about Marcus Garvey, Reparations, Repatriation, Rastafari and The Glorious Achievements of Africans by numerous countries (South Africa, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Ethiopia, Ghana, United States of America, Canada, Barbados, Antigua, Martinique, Guadeloupe, Costa Rica, Dominica, Cuba, India, Russia, Poland, England, St. Vincent, St. Lucia, Trinidad and now St. Kitts and Nevis.

"THE STORY OF CARNIVAL" PANEL DISCUSSION AT UNIVERSITY OF THE WEST INDIES

THE STORY OF CARNIVAL- DECEMBER 13TH 2011 at UWI
St. Kitts and Nevis National Carnival is hosting a discussion on "The Story of Carnival" Tuesday December 13th 2011 8:00pm at the University of the West Indies Open Campus The Gardens St. Kitts with an impressive panel of contributors; Alphonso Barker, Stanley Franks, Alexis Knight, Cyril "Puntan" Webster, and Dauna Manchester.  This team of individuals when combined offers a wealth of experience and knowledge about the early development of National Carnival.

ALPHONSO BARKER can speak on all aspects of Carnival prior to 1971 with special emphasis on Folklore Street Theater.  He participated in Carnival as a Clown and his brother "The Mighty Kush" was the first Calypso King of St. Kitts.


STANLEY FRANKS can speak about all aspects of Carnival past and present including music and bands of the past.  As a Carnival Costume Builder he turned out some of the most creative and spectacular Carnival Queen Costumes.


ALEXIS KNIGHT served as an interim Chairman for National Carnival from 1972 to 1973 and had great involvement in all aspects of the Steel Band.  He is the first man to defy the status quo by taking the steel band the church.


CYRIL "PUNTAN" WEBSTER a Carnival pundit can speak on all aspects of the steel band and folklore.


DAUNA MANCHESTER served on the first National Carnival Committee as the Coordinator of National Carnival in 1971 and Children's Carnival.

NGOMBULU YA SANGUI YA MINA BANTU LASCONY WILL LECTURE IN ST. KITTS MONDAY DECEMBER 2ND 2011 AT THE UNIVERSITY OF THE WEST INDIES

"..., NYSYMB LASCONY visited more than one hundred museums throughout the world, has attended over 300 concerts (especially jazz, blues and reggae), and visited Africa in 419 villages, 112 cities (all continents together). He toured Africa and Europe, performing in various jazz festivals as a poet".

"It was after reading "The philosophy and opinions of Marcus Garvey" that he finally committed to the History and Negro Art. He has travelled 23 countries in Africa, 18 from Europe, 11 in the Caribbean and America, camera in hand".


Since then, nearly two decades, the activist is useful lectures on jazz and on various historical subjects relating to the Negro question. He has performed as a lecturer in many schools, universities, Institutes, cultural centres, bookstores, libraries and museums :"

His aim is to show the other side of Africa, the laughing, singing, creating, and not one that reaches out to receive alms. The books can be read and understood by those who are literate, while images can be more easily interpreted, even by the illiterate. HIS AIM IS TO POPULARIZE KNOWLEDGE, BECAUSE IGNORANCE IS THE MAIN SOURCE OF INCOMPREHENSION BETWEEN HUMAN BEINGS. "A man who travelled a lot does not carry prejudices in his luggage", he concludes. When the history books and the foreign media caricature Africa is a duty for one (or) who is born to correct this false image. That is why he has just completed two series of documentary titled "Portrait of Engineering African" and "Africa: the hidden beauty", a long journey that takes us from the coast of the Zambezi River to Sahel. Monumental works for those who can not move. He combines poetry with jazz, mixtures know orchestrated by a man who knows how to absorb profound texts.

NYSYMB LASCONY may claim to have made more than 150 presentations and lectures on the histories of old Africa’s empires, Jazz and Pan-Africanism which he is one of the best (in the francophone zone). His motto is: FAITH, DETERMINATION, and COURAGE. These three elements are, according to him essential to the course. He refuses to be locked in a category, although the majority of those who met him described as the "GLOBE TROTTER FAMILY".

When people ask him " who finance his journeys?", he always replies with a smile to the question, that at he (or she) who knows the price of freedom must have the resources, simply by working. Life is a choice. There are those who prefer to collect cars, jewels and those who prefer to have a library full of books, although all three options are not mutually exclusive. That hunger justifies the means. NYSYMB LASCONY chose the second option, that of his sacrifice material comforts to live fully his passions".
